Ebola infection numbers in Congo approach 4,000

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to spread, with health authorities reporting 3,973 confirmed infections and 1,801 deaths. This marks a significant increase from previous figures, highlighting the ongoing severity of the epidemic.

The majority of cases, nearly 90 percent, are concentrated in the remote Ituri province in the eastern part of the country. However, the virus has also been detected in five other provinces, including Kisangani, one of Congo's largest cities, indicating a concerning geographical spread.

This particular outbreak is associated with the bundibugyo variant of the Ebola virus. This variant is known for its high mortality rate, estimated between 30 and 50 percent. Critically, unlike the more common Zaire variant responsible for previous outbreaks, there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment available for the bundibugyo strain.

The current epidemic in Congo is the second-largest Ebola outbreak on record, surpassed only by the West Africa outbreak from 2014-2016. That earlier epidemic affected Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, resulting in a total of 28,616 infections and 11,310 deaths, according to the World Health Organization.
