Ebonyi police warn officers against extortion, illegal phone searches

The police command in Ebonyi State has issued a stern warning to its officers, prohibiting acts of extortion, harassment, and the unlawful searching of citizens' mobile phones. Police Commissioner Urunwa Okafor emphasized the critical need for officers to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and respect for human rights during a strategic meeting with senior officers in Abakaliki.

Commissioner Okafor conveyed directives from the Inspector-General of Police, stressing discipline and accountability. She specifically cautioned officers against misconduct, including incivility towards the public, abuse of office, and unethical practices. The warning against unlawfully searching mobile phones and other personal electronic devices without a valid warrant was particularly strong, as such actions violate citizens' rights.

Senior officers were tasked with strengthening supervision and monitoring of their subordinates. Okafor stated that any lapses in supervision leading to misconduct would result in disciplinary action against the responsible supervisors. The command also directed officers to intensify intelligence gathering as the electioneering period approaches, ensuring effective policing within their respective areas.

The command also instructed Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to sustain aggressive, intelligence-led raids on identified criminal hideouts to proactively prevent crime across the state.
