Ecuador busts migrant smuggling ring, including police officer and ex-immigration official

Ecuadorian authorities have dismantled a sophisticated human smuggling operation, arresting four individuals, including a serving police officer and a former immigration official. The group is accused of exploiting vulnerable migrants seeking to reach the United States.

The network allegedly used clandestine routes to move individuals across borders, evading immigration controls. Investigations revealed that five victims were trafficked by the group, reportedly being detained by Mexican authorities and deported back to Ecuador. The former immigration official, who previously worked at the crucial Rumichaca International Bridge border crossing between Ecuador and Colombia, is believed to have used authentic immigration stamps to facilitate the irregular movements, ensuring they went undetected in official systems.

According to the police, the smugglers charged each victim between $14,000 and $20,000 for the perilous journey. The operation to apprehend the suspects involved four provinces within Ecuador and received support from the U.S. Diplomatic Security Service. The Interior Minister, John Reimberg, highlighted the international cooperation in dismantling the ring.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine if other individuals were involved in the smuggling activities. The arrested individuals have been handed over to judicial authorities to face charges related to human trafficking and organized crime.
