Ecuador deploys over 57,000 police for Independence Day holiday security

Ecuador is mobilizing an extensive security operation involving more than 57,000 police officers to ensure public safety during the upcoming August 10th Independence Day holiday. The deployment, set to begin Friday, August 7, and conclude Tuesday, August 11, 2026, will cover the entire nation.

The security forces will concentrate their efforts on key areas expected to see high visitor numbers, including highways, bus terminals, airports, beaches, and tourist attractions. The operation will utilize a significant contingent of personnel from preventive, investigative, and intelligence units. Supporting this ground force will be four aircraft, 10 drones, 73 mobile response units, 17 ambulances, 7,058 motorcycles, and 4,218 patrol cars.

The strategy, dubbed "Operational Strategy 3D," aims to weaken, disorganize, and dismantle criminal structures. In addition to general patrols and preventive checks, police will conduct targeted interventions in strategic locations. On major roads, 1,979 officers will monitor highways, toll booths, and gas stations, focusing on preventing illicit activities and traffic accidents while ensuring rapid emergency response.

To enhance citizen reporting, the police have established 9,119 QR codes across the country. These codes will allow the public to confidentially submit information regarding homicides, extortion, kidnappings, human trafficking, drug and arms trafficking, and missing persons. The operation will be coordinated with national emergency services, disaster management, traffic authorities, local governments, and the Ministry of Public Health.

For residents leaving their homes during the holiday, the police are offering free periodic home visits and secure value transfer services for those needing to transport cash. Travelers are advised to ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition, adhere to traffic laws, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, and use official channels for reporting emergencies.
