Ecuador electric vehicle sales surge nearly fourfold on tax breaks

Ecuadorians are embracing electric vehicles at a significantly higher rate, with purchases of 100% electric cars nearly quadrupling in the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year. The Service of Internal Revenue (SRI) reported that 5,509 electric vehicles were acquired between January and June 2026, a substantial increase from the 1,394 registered in the same period of 2025. This boom is largely credited to a comprehensive tax exemption policy. Owners of these vehicles benefit from a complete waiver of the Vehicle Property Tax, along with reduced fees for the Transit Accident Insurance Fund (SPPAT) and minimal charges from the National Transit Agency (ANT). The government sees these incentives as crucial for fostering a transition towards sustainable mobility and reducing polluting emissions. The automotive sector saw the most dramatic growth, with purchases soaring by 612% compared to the first half of 2025. This policy, established by the Organic Law for the Strengthening of Protected Areas, underscores Ecuador's commitment to environmental goals and cleaner transportation technologies.
