Ecuador hospital introduces AI-powered CT scanner

Ecuador's Hospital Metropolitano has unveiled the SOMATOM Pro.Pulse, marking a significant advancement in medical diagnostics by incorporating artificial intelligence into computed tomography.

This new scanner is the first of its kind in Ecuador and one of only five in South America. It utilizes AI to tailor each scan to the individual patient, a departure from standard CT exams. Before a scan begins, a 3D camera creates a digital avatar of the patient. The system analyzes the patient's position, body type, and vital signs like heart rate and breathing. This data allows the AI to automatically adjust scan parameters, including speed and radiation dose, to optimize image quality and minimize exposure.

Dr. Christian Armijos, head of the imaging department at Hospital Metropolitano, highlighted that the AI "enhances us. It makes us more efficient, more precise, and allows us to deliver information faster." The system can even detect metallic implants or prosthetics and modify the scan to reduce interference, ensuring a personalized and accurate examination. The dual-source technology, employing two X-ray tubes and detectors simultaneously, significantly speeds up the process. Scans that previously took 10-15 minutes can now be completed in about six minutes, which is particularly beneficial for children, the elderly, and patients who have difficulty remaining still.

The SOMATOM Pro.Pulse's ability to adapt to each patient and its increased speed represent a leap forward in diagnostic imaging. By automating parts of the process and providing higher quality images more rapidly, the technology empowers medical specialists to identify critical findings with greater speed and precision, ultimately benefiting patient care.
