Ecuador issues extreme weather alert amid heat and fire risk

Ecuador is bracing for extreme weather conditions as the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inamhi) issued Meteorological Warning No. 59. The alert is in effect from August 12 to August 15, 2026, signaling significant atmospheric variations across the country.

The forecast predicts a progressive increase in daytime temperatures, with the Coastal region expected to experience highs between 33-35°C, the Amazon region similar temperatures, and the Inter-Andean region potentially exceeding 27°C. Strong wind gusts are anticipated in the Andean highlands, contributing to a heightened risk of forest fires nationwide.

Specific provinces are identified as particularly vulnerable to fires. In the coastal areas, Manabí, Guayas, Los Ríos, and El Oro are at risk. The Sierra region includes Imbabura, Pichincha, and Loja, while the eastern Amazonian sectors of Sucumbíos, Orellana, and Pastaza are also highlighted.

Furthermore, the Inamhi warns of very high to extremely high UV radiation levels, especially on Wednesday, August 12. The Sierra region, including Pichincha and Imbabura, will reach a peak of 12, while coastal provinces will see levels between 8 and 10. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM.

The unusual weather patterns are attributed to high sea surface temperatures off the continental coast, atmospheric stability, low humidity in the highlands, and dry vegetation. Inamhi urges the public to take precautions against heat, stay hydrated, ventilate homes, and report any fires immediately.
