Ecuador's Geophysical Institute: Earthquakes in Venezuela and Colombia do not predict an imminent quake

Seismic events in Venezuela and Colombia do not signal an impending major earthquake in Ecuador, according to the Geophysical Institute (IG) of the National Polytechnic School. The institute addressed public concerns linking the tremors in neighboring countries to potential seismic activity in Ecuador.

The IG explained that the earthquake in Venezuela on June 24, 2026, was a shallow event originating in the Earth's outer crust. In contrast, the tremor recorded in Colombia on August 10, 2026, occurred at a depth exceeding 100 kilometers within the subducted plate beneath the continent. The IG emphasized that these events are independent, featuring distinct seismic sources and epicenters located more than 900 kilometers apart.

Furthermore, the institute clarified that this seismic activity is unrelated to Ecuador's own seismicity, dispelling any notion that these events could trigger a significant earthquake within the country. The IG reiterated that earthquakes cannot be predicted and cautioned against unsubstantiated predictions that could incite panic or misinformation. Ecuadorians are urged to rely solely on official sources for information.

Despite the lack of an imminent threat linked to the Venezuelan and Colombian tremors, Ecuador's location in a geologically active region necessitates ongoing preparedness. The IG recommends maintaining preventive measures against potential earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, providing resources on its website for guidance on response protocols.
