Ecuador Launches Anonymous Platform to Report Port Drug Trafficking

Ecuador, in partnership with the European Union, has launched a new platform designed to combat drug trafficking activities within its ports. Named Alerta Anónima (Anonymous Alert), the initiative provides a secure channel for citizens to report suspicious activities, with a particular focus on protecting port workers, transporters, cargo personnel, and exporters.

The platform operates through the website www.alertaanonima.com. Users are prompted to provide specific details about their suspicions, including the date, location or port, site reference, suspect description, vehicle information, and a detailed account of the activity. Users can also upload evidence such as photos, videos, or documents. Crucially, the platform does not request personal identification details like national ID numbers or names, ensuring absolute anonymity for those reporting.

Alerta Anónima employs 100% encrypted systems to guarantee that user identities remain completely confidential and untraceable. The platform assures users, "Your report is confidential, secure, immediate, and is sent directly to the competent authorities." It is important to note that Alerta Anónima is not an emergency service; for urgent information on criminal activities, citizens should contact 131 or 1800-Delito, and for emergencies, dial 911.

The primary objective of this tool is to identify risks and preempt threats affecting port infrastructure, thereby strengthening security and improving surveillance protocols across Ecuador's ports. The 'Alerta Anónima' project is co-financed by the European Union through the Eufort-EC project, in collaboration with Ecuador's Ministries of Interior and Defense, as well as its Police and Navy. The model is inspired by a similar system successfully implemented at the port of Antwerp, Belgium.
