Ecuador Opens Two Collection Centers to Send Aid to Earthquake Victims in Colombia

Ecuador is extending a hand of solidarity to its neighbor Colombia, establishing two humanitarian aid collection centers to gather support for those affected by a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake. The Ecuadorian government announced that these centers, one in the capital Quito and another in the coastal city of Guayaquil, will be operational from Wednesday, August 14th, through Friday, August 16th.

The National Secretariat for Risk Management (SNGR) detailed the types of essential items being requested. These include bedding for warm climates, mosquito nets, single or one-and-a-half-person mattresses, five-person tents, plastic buckets for water storage, soap, toothbrushes for adults and children, toothpaste, bath towels, and cream deodorant. Ecuador urged citizens to donate responsibly, ensuring all items are in good condition and adhere to the specified list.

Beyond material aid, Ecuador has also pledged significant operational support. The country has placed 47 rescue workers, along with specialized dogs and equipment from the Quito Fire Department, at Colombia's disposal. These teams are equipped for seven days of autonomous operation, demonstrating a robust commitment to assisting in search and rescue efforts.

The SNGR emphasized that this initiative aims to "strengthen the bonds of brotherhood that unite both countries." The earthquake, which struck on Monday with its epicenter near San José del Palmar in the Chocó department, has resulted in a significant death toll, with Colombian authorities reporting at least 181 fatalities, though regional balances suggest over 240 deaths.
