Ecuador Police Dismantle Criminal Group in Cotopaxi Operation

Ecuadorian police have dismantled a criminal organization in the La Maná canton of Cotopaxi province as part of a broader national security initiative. The operation, dubbed 'Apolo 48,' was executed on the night of Friday, July 31, 2026, in line with a presidential decree aimed at reinforcing security across the country.

The police intervention targeted criminal structures known for high levels of violence and the distribution of illegal substances. During the operation, authorities seized a significant quantity of drugs, including 76 plastic bags containing what is presumed to be marijuana and five bags of suspected cocaine. They also found a precision electronic scale, a blender with residue, and a metal spoon, indicating drug preparation activities.

In addition to narcotics, the police confiscated two .22 caliber carbine firearms, along with 18 caliber 20 cartridges, three caliber 16 cartridges, one caliber 5.56 cartridge, and one .38 caliber cartridge. These seizures highlight the arsenal available to the dismantled group.

One individual, identified as Luis Y., a 52-year-old Ecuadorian national, was arrested during the operation. Authorities noted that he has no prior criminal record. He has been placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authorities to face legal proceedings. The National Police reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining social peace, disrupting criminal economies, and ensuring public order in Cotopaxi.
