Ecuador police seize 1.6 tons of cocaine in Esmeraldas, disrupting drug flow

Ecuador's National Police conducted a significant anti-drug operation on the country's northern coast, seizing a massive amount of cocaine in Esmeraldas province. The operation, carried out on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, in the San Gregorio sector of Muisne canton, is part of the 'Estrategia Operacional 3D.' Following months of investigation, police identified an area used by criminal structures for drug trafficking activities, successfully preventing a large shipment from reaching international markets.

The seizure represents a substantial blow to drug trafficking finances. Investigative units estimate the seized cocaine's domestic market value at approximately $1.8 million. Its value on U.S. markets could reach $48 million, significantly weakening the logistical and operational capabilities of criminal groups involved.

During the tactical deployment, law enforcement located a Go-Fast type boat containing the alkaloid. According to statements by Interior Minister John Reimberg via his X account, field tests confirmed the substance was cocaine hydrochloride. The operation yielded 1,611 blocks of cocaine, contained in 42 sacks, with an approximate weight of 1.6 tons. Additionally, authorities seized two outboard motors and 200 gallons of fuel in 39 canisters.

Minister Reimberg's posts indicated that the criminal organization obtained the substance in Colombia, temporarily stored it on the northern coast of Esmeraldas, and then shipped it towards Central and North American countries. The police operation is ongoing in Esmeraldas province as authorities gather more evidence on the criminal structure involved in storing the cargo.
