Ecuador’s electoral authority appoints polling-station board members

Ecuador’s National Electoral Council has selected 288,949 citizens to serve on polling-station boards in the country’s 2027 local elections and elections for the Council of Citizen Participation and Social Control.

The appointments took place simultaneously on Sept. 2 across the 24 provincial electoral boards and the special board for citizens abroad. Of the total, 285,509 appointments went to voters inside Ecuador, while 3,440 went to Ecuadorians registered in overseas constituencies.

University students make up about 80% of those selected. The remaining members include high-school graduates, professionals from different fields and residents of rural areas.

CNE President José Cabrera Zurita and councilor Enrique Pita García took part in the appointment process in Pichincha. Cabrera said the selected citizens would be responsible for receiving and counting ballots and safeguarding votes during the elections.

The CNE’s individual notification process will start Friday, Sept. 4. Mandatory in-person training will begin Monday, Sept. 7, at locations designated by electoral officials.
