Ecuadorian activist jailed for 30 days over social media post on unsolved case

Ecuadorian political activist and communicator Gabriela Panchana has been sentenced to 30 days in jail and ordered to issue a public apology for a message she posted on the social media platform X. The sentence, handed down on July 27, 2026, stems from a post related to the unresolved case of Monika Silva's death.

Panchana's message on X called for clarity in the Monika Silva case and mentioned that she had provided information to the U.S. Embassy regarding an Ecuadorian company. A subsequent discussion on X with a lawyer led to the legal action against her. Panchana stated that she was condemned for a tweet that allegedly contained slanderous defamation.

She highlighted the extraordinary speed of her trial, noting that the entire process, including witnesses, experts, arguments, and the verdict, was completed within a single day, lasting six hours and 40 minutes. Panchana contrasted this swift judgment of her opinion with the lack of progress in the Monika Silva case, where no arrests have yet been made. She also pointed out that organizations and individuals seeking to observe her hearing were denied access, either in person or remotely.

Panchana rejected the judicial decision, vowing to fight it with all available legal resources. She framed her case not just as a personal matter but as a broader issue concerning the penalization of expression and the risks associated with exercising the right to opinion in Ecuador.
