Ecuadorian Army Captures Suspected Financial Operator for Albanian Mafia

The Ecuadorian Army announced the capture of a man identified as Pablo Adrián H. T., known by the alias 'Caballo', who is suspected of being a key financial operator for the Albanian mafia. This criminal organization is allegedly responsible for smuggling significant amounts of cocaine from Ecuador's ports to Europe.

The arrest took place during a military operation in La Maná, a municipality located in the Andean province of Cotopaxi. In addition to an existing arrest warrant for drug trafficking, 'Caballo' is also being investigated for alleged money laundering and involvement in organized crime. The Army highlighted his purported connections to the Albanian mafia, whose leader in Ecuador, Dritan Gjika, was apprehended last year in the United Arab Emirates for extradition.

La Maná is situated in a strategically important corridor within the Central Sierra region, a location that facilitates the movement of people, goods, and logistical resources utilized by criminal groups. The municipality has been under a state of exception for several months due to the high levels of criminality and violence affecting parts of Ecuador.

This arrest is not an isolated incident involving alleged ties to the Albanian mafia in Ecuador this year. In March, authorities ordered the pre-trial detention of fourteen individuals suspected of links to this criminal network and involvement in drug trafficking to Europe via container shipments. 'Caballo' was transferred to Quevedo in the Los Ríos province for judicial processing.
