Ecuadorian football players to wear traditional Montecristi hats at 2026 World Cup

Ecuadorian football stars will sport traditional Montecristi hats, hand-woven from toquilla straw, during the 2026 World Cup. This initiative, a collaboration between the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI) and the Municipality of Montecristi, aims to safeguard the heritage of toquilla straw weaving.

The project integrates cultural preservation with economic development. The OEI's director in Ecuador, Sara Jaramillo, emphasized that supporting toquilla straw preservation directly connects patrimonial wealth with productive development. The organization highlighted that with national team players showcasing these hats, the preservation project transcends technical boundaries, demonstrating how culture and sport can foster integration, innovation, and national sovereignty.

To enhance global reach, the initiative employs cutting-edge technology. Virtual reality (VR) headsets will offer immersive five-minute tours of rural communities in the Manabí province, allowing international audiences to experience historical sites and the weaving techniques passed down through artisan families. Furthermore, a physical traceability system will be implemented, featuring QR codes on each hat. These codes will provide buyers with the story of the artisans behind their purchase, ensuring that the economic value directly benefits the creators in their local communities.
