Ecuadorian footballer Daniel Valencia recounts experience during Colombia earthquake

An earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck Colombia on August 10, 2026, causing significant damage and fear, with tremors felt as far away as Ecuador and Panama.

Ecuadorian footballer Daniel Valencia, who plays for América de Cali, was on his way to training when the earthquake hit. He described the experience as a "very strong scare" and immediately returned to his apartment to be with his family. Valencia recalled the devastating 2016 earthquake in Manabí, Ecuador, noting his presence there at the time.

We are all fine. It was a very strong scare. It was quite long. I was on my way to training and returned to the apartment to be with my family.

Following the seismic event, América de Cali issued a statement expressing solidarity with the affected regions, particularly Valle del Cauca, Buenaventura, Chocó, Risaralda, and Caldas. The club confirmed no human losses among its staff and is concentrating its efforts on providing aid. They are collaborating with the Red Cross and local authorities to direct assistance and support recovery efforts.

The earthquake's epicenter was located in San José del Palmar, Chocó. Significant damage was reported in cities like Quibdó, Cali, Pereira, and Manizales, with collapsed buildings, damaged structures, and fallen facades. As of August 11, Colombian authorities confirmed 181 fatalities. In Panama, buildings and hospitals were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
