Ecuadorian prospect Sergio Vásquez joins LAFC from Orense SC

Sergio Vásquez, a promising young talent from Ecuador, is making the leap to international soccer. Orense SC and Los Angeles FC (LAFC) officially announced the transfer of the Ecuadorian midfielder on Tuesday, August 25, confirming his move to Major League Soccer (MLS).

Vásquez, 22, leaves the club where he developed from the youth ranks, having established himself as one of the most promising young players in the Liga Pro. His new challenge will be with a leading team in American soccer, an institution that has previously welcomed several Ecuadorian players.

LAFC welcomed Vásquez with a brief message: "Sergio Vásquez is black and gold." Orense provided details of the negotiation, stating that LAFC acquired 70% of the player's economic rights. The Machala-based club will retain the remaining 30%, potentially generating future income from subsequent transfers.

Vásquez began his journey at Orense at the age of 11, even balancing soccer with basketball in his early years before fully committing to his football career. He participated in the 2022 Copa Libertadores U-20 and made his senior debut a year later. In total, he played 86 official matches, scoring 5 goals and providing 7 assists. Known for his versatility, he can play as an attacking midfielder or on the wings. His performance with Orense attracted international attention, and he will now embark on his first experience outside Ecuador.

Vásquez becomes the fourth Ecuadorian to play for LAFC, following Diego Palacios (2019-2023), José Cifuentes (2020-2023), and Jhegson Méndez (2022). Palacios and Cifuentes were key players during one of the club's most successful periods, forming part of the team that won the Supporters' Shield and the MLS Cup in 2022.
