Edo State grants mini-grid license to indigenous power firm

Edo State is taking a significant step towards enhancing its energy infrastructure by issuing a 7-megawatt mini-grid electricity license to IZENERGY Limited, an indigenous power firm. This move is part of a broader strategy to increase electricity access, champion renewable energy sources, and stimulate industrial growth across the state.

The license was officially presented by the Commissioner for Power, Hon. Paul Usenbo, during a ceremony in Benin City. Usenbo confirmed that IZENERGY Limited successfully met the stringent financial and technical requirements outlined in the Edo State Electricity Law 2025. The approved 7MW project is expected to power numerous communities and is seen as a crucial component of the state government's vision for energy self-sufficiency.

We are creating an enabling environment through policies and reforms that will attract investors and guarantee sufficient, reliable and efficient power supply for our people and that is why the Edo State Government has issued a 7-megawatt (MW) mini-grid electricity licence to indigenous investors, IZENERGY Limited.

This initiative integrates national grid supply with independent power generation and renewable solutions. The state administration emphasizes its commitment to ensuring reliable and affordable electricity for all residents, with a particular focus on rural electrification through renewable mini-grids. These reforms are designed to be compliant with the national Electricity Act 2023 and state-specific laws, promoting the decentralization of power generation and distribution to encourage private sector involvement.

Edo State is actively pursuing further developments, including plans for independent power projects totaling approximately 100MW across its three senatorial districts. The licensing process for the Edo North Electricity Company is also nearing completion. Officials believe these reforms will attract both local and international investment, create jobs, and bolster industrialization. "Edo State is open for business," stated Commissioner Usenbo, highlighting the creation of an enabling environment through supportive policies and reforms to guarantee sufficient, reliable, and efficient power supply.

The Edo-based renewable energy company had operated for more than five years and relocated part of its operations to Edo State about three years ago after identifying significant electricity supply gaps.
