Education is Nigeria's path to development, leaders tell government

Nigerian leaders on Sunday called for a renewed focus on quality education as the bedrock of national development. At a graduation ceremony for Pacesetters Schools in Abuja, prominent figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President David Mark stressed that prioritizing education is essential for economic growth, innovation, and peace.

Education remains Nigeria’s greatest investment, and no nation can achieve sustainable development without giving priority to quality learning.

Atiku Abubakar, represented by his wife, described education as the primary driver of national transformation. He urged government to ensure universal access to quality education and cautioned graduates against illicit activities like internet fraud and drug trafficking, emphasizing that true success lies in service and societal contribution, not material wealth.

Senator Mohammed Datti Baba-Ahmed, founder of Baze University, delivered the keynote address, stating that education must cultivate individuals who are not only knowledgeable but also morally sound and dedicated to nation-building. He highlighted that learning transcends formal schooling, integrating knowledge with wisdom, integrity, and discipline. Baba-Ahmed warned that shortcuts often lead to failure, encouraging lifelong learning and perseverance.

Knowledge without character is a body without a skeleton. Knowledge without wisdom lacks direction, while knowledge without morality loses its purpose.

Former Senate President David Mark, represented by Senator Tunde Ogbeha, reinforced the idea of education as a continuous journey. He advised graduates to constantly enhance their skills and knowledge while maintaining integrity. The proprietor of Pacesetters Schools, Barrister Kenneth Imansuangbon, echoed these sentiments, calling education Nigeria's most vital investment and urging increased government funding, improved standards, and equitable access for all children.
