Efi Achtsioglou Resigns from Parliamentary Seat

Efi Achtsioglou announced her resignation from her parliamentary seat, a move that follows her recent departure from the New Left party. This decision marks a significant political development within the center-left political landscape in Greece.

I have long expressed my disagreement with the strategic decision of the current leadership of New Left to focus more on defending an ideological identity, rather than on the effort to build a left-wing majority pole. A pole that will be fully oppositional to the policies of the right, but at the same time will have prospects of victory and governance, for the benefit of the workers, the popular and middle strata, the youth.

The resignation comes in the wake of seven other lawmakers leaving the New Left party, which resulted in the dissolution of its parliamentary group. Achtsioglou's decision adds another layer to the ongoing internal realignments within the party and is expected to have political repercussions.

With these data, I am making a decision of responsibility and consistency with the principles I have served from the first moment of my participation in politics. Today I am leaving the parliamentary group of New Left. At the same time, I announce my decision to resign from the parliamentary office. It is an act of conscience.

In her statement, Achtsioglou explained her reasons, emphasizing the importance of political consistency and personal integrity. She stated her long-held disagreement with the New Left's current leadership strategy, which she believes prioritizes defending an ideological identity over building a broad left-wing coalition capable of challenging right-wing policies and achieving electoral success for the benefit of working and middle classes. Achtsioglou affirmed that she is not leaving politics entirely and remains committed to the collective struggle for social justice alongside citizens.
