Egypt and Palestinian Authority discuss unity and challenges to the Palestinian cause

Egyptian intelligence chief Hassan Rashad met with a Palestinian Authority delegation in Cairo, signaling Egypt's continued efforts to foster Palestinian unity amidst ongoing mediation efforts to end the war in Gaza.

The meeting addressed the latest developments in the West Bank and the upcoming Palestinian elections scheduled for November 28. According to Egyptian authorities, the two sides agreed to "unify national efforts to face the challenges confronting the Palestinian cause at the current stage." The Palestinian delegation included Vice President of the State of Palestine Hussein al-Sheikh, President of the Palestinian National Council Rawih Fattouh, and Palestinian intelligence chief Majed Faraj.

This diplomatic engagement precedes a crucial round of talks in Cairo, where major Palestinian factions, including Hamas and Fatah, are expected to convene under Egyptian auspices. The objective is to revive national dialogue and tackle the deep-seated political division that has persisted since 2007.

Egypt has been actively involved in diplomatic initiatives to promote reconciliation among Palestinian forces and establish a common political stance. Previous attempts, such as the Algiers Agreement in 2022 and the Beijing Declaration in July 2024, have aimed to end the division and strengthen national unity, but the political landscape remains complex.
