Egypt braces for severe 48-hour heatwave

Egypt is bracing for a severe heatwave, with the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) issuing a warning for hot weather across the country over the next 48 hours. Greater Cairo and most regions will experience peak temperatures, with high humidity making the heat feel more intense.

Daily highs are projected to reach 39C (102F) in Greater Cairo, with perceived temperatures hitting 41C (106F). Northern Upper Egypt could see highs of 40C (104F) and perceived temperatures of 42C (108F), while Southern Upper Egypt faces the most extreme conditions with highs of 43C (109F) and perceived temperatures of 44C (111F).

The EMA also cautioned about potential fog formation from early morning hours in several areas, including northern Egypt, Greater Cairo, Suez Canal cities, central Sinai, and northern Upper Egypt. Intermittent wind activity, with speeds between 30-35 km/h, is expected, which may offer some relief at night in exposed areas. Sand and dust storms are also possible in parts of Upper Egypt.

Coastal areas along the Mediterranean, including Salloum, Marsa Matrouh, El Alamein, Alexandria, and Baltim, will experience wind activity leading to waves of 1.5 to 2.5 meters. A slight chance of low cloud formation and insignificant drizzle exists over scattered areas of the northern coast, Lower Egypt, Greater Cairo, and the Suez Canal cities.

The authority strongly advised citizens to avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours and to maintain hydration, particularly for the elderly, children, individuals with chronic illnesses, and those working outdoors.
