About Egypt Independent
Egypt Independent is owned by Al-Masry Media Corporation, with businessman Salah Diab serving as the owner and publisher. It originated as an English-language supplement to the Arabic daily Al-Masry Al-Youm.
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and Freedom House consistently rank Egypt as 'not free' for press freedom, with RSF placing Egypt at 170 out of 180 countries in its 2024 and 2025 World Press Freedom Index. The Egyptian government maintains significant control over the media landscape, leading to widespread self-censorship and the blocking of numerous independent websites. While Biasly rates Egypt Independent with a 'Somewhat Left' bias and 'Average' reliability, Ground News reports 'Unknown factuality' and no bias rating from major media watchdogs. The outlet's print edition was shut down in 2013 after management scrutinized its content, indicating pressure on editorial independence within Egypt's restrictive media environment. The provided headline samples include a mix of international and domestic news, with some domestic reports covering government initiatives, which is consistent with the broader trend of media alignment in Egypt.
Reading context
Media systems vary by law, ownership, and editorial custom. We preserve each outlet's framing and add context so readers can compare coverage without treating one country as the default.

Gradual decrease in temperatures across Egypt on Wednesday, with active winds and potential sandstorms predicted for several areas, disrupting maritime traffic in the Red Sea and Mediterranean coasts. | Egypt Independent (EG) | Wednesday, May 22, 2024, 10:00 AM GMT+3 | The Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) forecasts a gradual decrease in temperatures across northern Egypt, extending to Greater Cairo and northern Upper Egypt, on Wednesday. This decrease will be accompanied by wind activity that will help to moderate the weather for some areas. The EMA explained that the weather will be mild at night and during the early morning hours across most regions, while hot weather will prevail during the day in most areas, becoming very hot in southern Upper Egypt. Greater Cairo and the Nile Delta will reach temperatures of 31C, while the northern coast will reach 23C. Temperatures in southern Upper Egypt will soar to 46C. Windy, rainy weather for Wednesday Wednesday’s weather maps warn of active winds with speeds ranging between 30-40 km/h in several areas, with the possibility of sandstorms and dust storms in South Sinai, the northwestern coast, and the Red Sea Governorate. This may lead to reduced horizontal visibility in some areas of the Western Desert and Upper Egypt, with gusts of wind reaching speeds of 50-60 km/h at intervals. The forecast also predicts a chance of light rain in areas along the northern coast and northern Lower Egypt. The forecast further indicates a slight chance of low cloud formation over scattered areas of the northeastern coast, southern Lower Egypt, Greater Cairo, and the Suez Canal cities, which may be accompanied by light, insignificant drizzle in some areas. The EMA noted that there would be disruptions to maritime traffic in parts of the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Gulf of Suez, and the Gulf of Aqaba, with wind speeds ranging between 40-50 km/h and waves reaching heights of two to three meters. The authority urged citizens to take necessary precautions, especially drivers and those with allergies and sinus problems, and to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts.
