Egypt is cracking down on phone line fraud, NTRA assures

Egypt's National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) is intensifying its crackdown on mobile phone line fraud, assuring the public that it is actively addressing a surge in complaints. The NTRA spokesperson, Mohamed Ibrahim, reported that the authority received over 3,000 complaints and more than 100,000 inquiries in just two days concerning mobile lines registered under individuals' names without their consent or possession.

During a television interview, Ibrahim explained that the NTRA meticulously examines complaints involving problematic registration or ownership transfer of mobile lines. Each case undergoes thorough examination and verification. Citizens can report issues through the NTRA's call center or its announced communication channels. The authority reviews documentation provided by service providers to validate the details of each individual case.

Ibrahim emphasized that telecommunications companies will be held accountable for any wrongdoing. He clarified that penalties extend beyond mere registration or ownership transfer issues. The NTRA imposes sanctions on companies for various violations of regulations, with details published in monthly reports. The authority also ensures that citizens' rights are restored in cases where their claims are proven, sometimes even specifying the items returned to affected individuals.
