Egypt's Prime Minister Inspects Major Seawater Desalination Plant in Matrouh

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly visited the Al-Rumaila seawater desalination plant complex in Egypt's Matrouh Governorate, highlighting the strategic importance of water security for the region's development. He was accompanied by several ministers, including those responsible for Water Resources and Irrigation, Local Development, and Housing.

During the inspection, the Minister of Housing emphasized Matrouh's special focus within the state's urban and tourism expansion plans. This necessitates continuous development of the water and wastewater systems to ensure sustainable service delivery and accommodate seasonal consumption increases, particularly during the summer when the population and visitor numbers surge.

The Minister of Housing stated that expanding seawater desalination plants in Matrouh is a top priority, offering a strategic solution for the governorate's drinking water needs. She stressed the importance of adhering to regular operation and maintenance schedules to maximize production capacity and ensure drinking water meets the highest quality standards.

The Prime Minister received a detailed explanation from the Chairman of the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater, who reported that the Al-Rumaila complex has a total capacity of 125,000 cubic meters per day. The Al-Rumaila (1-2) station alone has a design capacity of 48,000 cubic meters per day, comprising eight desalination units and storage tanks totaling 20,000 cubic meters. Al-Rumaila (3) station adds 12,000 cubic meters per day.

Further details revealed that the Al-Rumaila (4) station, with four production units, can produce 65,000 cubic meters daily. Its commissioning will significantly enhance the drinking water system's efficiency, stabilize supplies, and improve service levels. Future expansion plans for this station could potentially double its capacity to 130,000 cubic meters per day. The company chairman also outlined the plant's operational stages, from seawater intake to purification and desalination, and noted the backup power system, which includes three generators each with a capacity of 2.5 megawatts, ensuring continuous operation. The strategic plan for Matrouh includes ten desalination projects by 2050, aiming for a total production capacity of 1,813,000 cubic meters per day.
