Egypt to implement biometric verification for SIM card registration

Egypt is set to implement biometric verification for mobile phone line registrations to combat the misuse of SIM cards. The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) is working with the country's four mobile operators to integrate these advanced identity checks into their phone applications.

The new system will allow mobile subscribers to verify their identity using unique biometric characteristics, such as fingerprints or facial scans, directly through their operator's mobile app. This move aims to strengthen the connection between a SIM card's registered data and its actual user, preventing lines from being registered in individuals' names without their knowledge or consent.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to tighten control over SIM card registration processes, addressing numerous complaints about unauthorized registrations. The NTRA seeks to ensure the identity of the actual line user is verified, thereby protecting citizens' data and the rights of telecommunications service consumers.

The new regulations extend to already registered SIM cards. Mobile operators are required to send messages to all existing subscribers, instructing them to visit operator branches to sign new contracts under the name of the actual line holder. Failure to complete this process within the given timeframe will lead to the permanent deactivation of the SIM card. This comprehensive verification process is designed to reorganize the data of current line holders and prevent future incidents of misuse.
