Eight groups seek to become political parties for 2029 elections

Panama's Electoral Tribunal is overseeing a surge of interest in national politics, with eight groups actively pursuing official recognition as political parties. The goal for these nascent organizations is to be eligible to compete in the 2029 general elections.

Currently, three of these groups, Movimiento Radix, Partido Acción Ciudadana Independiente, and Partido Nacional Humanitario, are in the crucial phase of collecting signatures from potential adherents. They must gather 45,503 signatures, representing 2% of the valid votes from the previous election, to achieve legal status. The deadline for this signature collection is December 31, 2027.

Meanwhile, five other organizations are in the earlier formation stage. These include Proyecto Panamá, Partido Auténtico Nacional, Partido Reconstrucción Ciudadana, Partido Transformación Nacional, and Partido Nuevo Horizonte. They have submitted initial documentation and, upon approval, will be authorized to begin their signature drives. The process for these groups starts with a memorial and includes submitting statutes, logos, and symbols, all subject to the Electoral Tribunal's review.
