Eight injured in gas explosion at Barcelona metro construction site

An explosion rocked a Barcelona metro construction site on Wednesday evening, injuring eight workers. The blast occurred at the Plaça de Sants station on line L5, which is currently undergoing renovations. Two of the injured are in serious condition, while three others sustained moderate injuries and three more had minor wounds.

The incident began earlier in the day when a gas leak occurred in the vicinity of the station after a pipeline was damaged during ongoing subway work. Emergency services, including nine fire crews and gas company personnel, responded to control the situation. Traffic was temporarily halted, and the area was secured as a precautionary measure.

While repair work was underway on the gas line around 10:50 p.m. local time, a deflagration occurred in the affected area. The explosion caused injuries to eight operators, who were treated by the Medical Emergency System (SEM) at a deployed advanced center. The blast also triggered a fire, which Barcelona firefighters continued to battle.
