El Nino intensifies Indonesia's forest fires, burning over 107,000 hectares

Indonesia is grappling with a severe outbreak of forest and land fires, intensified by a potent El Nino weather pattern. Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Djamari Chaniago, stated that the extreme conditions are accelerating the blazes across the archipelago. As of the latest reports, over 107,000 hectares have been consumed by fire.

Responding to a very harsh situation or weather that we are facing now, commonly called a strong El Nino, which has been in effect and started to take effect now until early September, even early October.

The El Nino phenomenon, characterized by unusually warm surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, is expected to continue its impact through early September, possibly extending into October. The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts a drier and longer dry season, with the El Nino event potentially persisting until early 2027.

Until today, the area of our country in Indonesia that has experienced forest fires totals more than 107 thousand hectares until today.

In response, the government has mobilized substantial resources to control the fires. This includes extensive aerial operations, deploying approximately 43 helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft as needed. Ground operations are also heavily supported by a large contingent of personnel and equipment. The aim is to contain the fires and mitigate further expansion.

Hopefully, in the future, we can still maintain all of that. Because of the sincerity of all of us, we have deployed so many personnel, tools, and equipment for it.

Data from the Ministry of Forestry indicates a significant increase in hotspots, with over 3,151 detected by early August. August alone saw 1,300 hotspots, underscoring the severity of the current situation. Despite the challenges, authorities are committed to controlling the disaster and hope to prevent it from worsening.

As a note, in carrying out aerial operations conducted by the Air Task Force, we deployed around 43 helicopters until today, plus fixed-wing aircraft which can carry between 110 to 15 depending on the need.
