El-Rufai: Atiku protests continued detention, bail ruling July 1

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai is facing corruption charges, with a Federal High Court in Kaduna scheduling July 1 for a ruling on his bail applications. El-Rufai, along with co-defendant Jimi Lawal and several corporate entities, faces an amended 11-count charge related to alleged abuse of office, financial impropriety, and money laundering, brought by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

El-Rufai pleaded not guilty to one count, while Lawal denied charges in counts six, seven, and eight. El-Rufai has consistently denied the allegations, asserting that his administration's actions were lawful and in the public interest.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized the ongoing detention and the bail ruling, warning that excessively stringent bail conditions could erode public confidence in the justice system. Previously, a court had granted El-Rufai bail under strict conditions, including two sureties, which he later sought to have varied but was denied.
