Elderly Andhra Couple Protesting Land Takeover Forcibly Removed By Excavator

A deeply disturbing incident in Andhra Pradesh's Vizianagaram district has brought to light the harsh realities faced by farmers protesting land acquisition for the upcoming Bhogapuram international airport. An elderly couple, identified as Baireddy Appala Narasaiah and Gouthamma, were forcibly lifted and moved aside in an excavator bucket while protesting the alleged forcible takeover of their land without due compensation.

The farmers were arguing that although they had surrendered their lands for the airport road, they were not paid the compensation and the issue was presently in the court. They were demanding that work be stopped until the court delivers its verdict and compensation is fully paid.

The video of the incident, which quickly went viral, shows the couple, both in their sixties, sitting inside the excavator's bucket to halt construction work. Local resident Shiva recounted how revenue officials and contractors, facing objections from farmers demanding pending compensation, resorted to intimidation tactics. The couple's humiliation and fear were palpable as they were unceremoniously displaced from the very land they claim was taken without fair payment.

The authorities got angry and asked the excavator operator to move them aside. The operator forcibly lifted the couple in the bucket and moved them aside, leaving them frightened and humiliated.

This event has ignited widespread anger among the local community and farmers, who accuse authorities and contractors of exploiting vulnerable villagers. The incident underscores a critical issue: the struggle for rightful compensation and the lengths to which some authorities may go to push development projects forward. While district collector S Ramasundar Reddy has stated that action has been initiated against the officials involved and the excavator operator has been reprimanded and taken into custody, the core issue of land compensation and legal processes remains a point of contention.
