Elderly Man Investigated for Animal Cruelty in Romania

Authorities in Alba County, Romania, have launched an investigation into a disturbing case of animal cruelty. The probe was initiated after video footage circulated on social media depicting an elderly man throwing the lifeless body of a cat over his property fence.

Following the online dissemination of the video on July 9th, police officers from the Animal Protection Bureau responded to clarify the incident. Investigators determined that the event occurred in the commune of Meteș. According to the findings, the 78-year-old man allegedly killed the cat by striking it multiple times with a blunt object, causing its death, before disposing of the carcass over the fence.

"Police officers dispatched to the scene confirmed that on July 8, 2026, the man, aged 78, allegedly inflicted several blows with a blunt object on a cat, causing its death, and subsequently threw its body over the property fence," stated representatives from the Alba County Police Inspectorate (IPJ Alba).

A criminal case has been formally opened against the septuagenarian under the provisions of animal protection legislation, specifically for the intentional killing of an animal without legal justification. Police are continuing their investigation to establish all the circumstances surrounding the offense.
