Surgeon, University Lecturer Under House Arrest for Allegedly Assaulting Gendarme

A surgeon and university lecturer in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, faces charges of assault and intimidation after allegedly attacking a gendarme on duty at the National Bank of Romania's regional branch. The incident occurred on the night of June 27, 2026, around 11:30 PM.

Prosecutors from the Cluj-Napoca Court allege that the doctor, identified in local media as Paul Andrei Țenț, a maxillofacial surgeon who also works in Oradea, struck the gendarme four times. One blow with an open palm to the face reportedly knocked off the victim's glasses, while other strikes were aimed at the face and head, though the victim managed to deflect the final blow.

Beyond the physical assault, prosecutors claim the doctor subjected the gendarme to insults and threats. He allegedly threatened the officer with death, job loss, and even criminal prosecution, attempting to coerce him into abandoning official measures. The doctor repeatedly cited his status as a "university lecturer," "surgeon," and "head of department" to intimidate the gendarme, suggesting he possessed significant influence and financial resources to cause the officer's dismissal.

While prosecutors sought pre-trial detention due to the severity of the alleged offenses, the Cluj-Napoca Court opted for house arrest. The doctor is being investigated for two counts of assault, and the criminal proceedings are ongoing.
