Elderly Man Rides Stolen Bike Past Police Station, Gets Caught

An 83-year-old man in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, made a brazen, albeit short-lived, escape after stealing a bicycle. The man, identified by his surname Pan, took a red folding bicycle valued at NT$20,000 from outside a convenience store in Fongshan District. His plan to get away with the theft took a bizarre turn when he decided to ride the stolen bike directly past the Fongshan Police Precinct. Fortunately for the owner, off-duty female officer Fang Yi-ching was just leaving work. She spotted the man and the distinctive red bicycle, immediately recognizing the suspect's description from a recent theft report. She alerted her colleagues, who quickly intercepted Pan. Initially, the elderly man denied the theft, claiming he had simply "taken it from the roadside." However, confronted with surveillance footage, he admitted to stealing the bicycle for transportation. The police successfully recovered the stolen bike for its owner. Given his advanced age, prosecutors decided not to transfer Pan for prosecution, but police are still forwarding the case on charges of theft. The incident serves as a reminder for cyclists to always lock their bikes, even for short periods, and to avoid leaving valuables unattended.
