Elderly Woman Avoids Scam, But Relative Falls Victim to 70,000 Euro Fraud

Police in Boeotia, Greece, have dismantled a fraud ring after an elderly woman narrowly escaped falling victim to their scheme, though a relative was less fortunate and lost 70,000 euros. The sophisticated scam involved impersonation and manipulation to extract a large sum of money.

The incident began on August 11 when an unknown perpetrator called the elderly woman, pretending to be a tax official. The woman, suspicious or perhaps alerted, ended the call. However, the fraudsters did not give up. Another member of the group then called a relative of the woman, this time posing as a police officer.

This second scammer convinced the relative to collect 70,000 euros in cash and place it in a bag outside their home. The pretext was to allegedly aid in the arrest of the unknown perpetrators. The arrested suspect, identified as a member of the criminal group, then collected the bag of money using his private vehicle.

Authorities organized an operation on the morning of August 28, leading to the suspect's arrest in Thebes. A search of his home and person uncovered four mobile phones, three bank cards, and 750 euros in cash. The vehicle used in the commission of the fraud was also seized. The suspect has a prior record, with previous arrests for drug offenses, theft, and property damage.

The arrested individual has been transferred to the Boeotia Prosecutor's Office. This case highlights the persistent threat of impersonation scams, particularly targeting vulnerable individuals, and the devastating financial and emotional toll they can inflict.
