Election Commission Raided Over Suspected Bid Rigging in Ballot Box Procurement

A joint investigation team has launched a forced investigation into the National Election Commission (NEC) and related companies over suspicions of bid rigging in the procurement of early voting ballot boxes and election supplies. The investigation, led by the joint investigation headquarters for the truth of infringement on the right to participate in national elections, is examining alleged illegal activities in the bidding process for ballot boxes and election-related service contracts.

The investigation covers the central NEC's contract for producing ballot boxes for internal voting districts, as well as contracts for election supplies issued by the NEC's regional offices in Gyeongnam, Gyeongbuk, and Busan. This is the first time authorities have conducted a compulsory investigation into allegations of bid rigging concerning the supply of election materials, including ballot boxes.

Previously, the joint investigation team had summoned NEC officials and printing company representatives as witnesses to verify facts related to the ordering and delivery of ballot papers during the June 3 local elections. The team is currently investigating other related issues, including a shortage of ballot papers during those elections, allegations of false input of voter turnout, and overseas trips by former NEC Chairman Noh Tae-ak.

The NEC's central and regional offices, along with the bidding companies, are subject to the search and seizure operations. The investigation aims to uncover any illegal acts that may have occurred during the procurement process for these critical election materials, signaling a serious inquiry into the integrity of the electoral system's logistical operations.
