Election Commission Special Prosecutor Candidates Named

A special committee has recommended two lawyers with prosecutorial backgrounds as candidates for the Special Prosecutor role. Lee Tae-han and Lee Hyuk were selected by the National Recommendation Committee for Special Prosecutor Candidates on August 14.

The committee, composed of six members with three appointed by the ruling and opposition parties respectively, unanimously approved the recommendation at its second meeting. Lee Tae-han, a 23rd cohort judicial trainee, graduated from Kyungnam High School and Korea University's law department. He previously served as a chief prosecutor in various offices, including Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office.

Lee Hyuk, also a graduate of Kyung Hee High School and Korea University's law department, held positions such as deputy chief prosecutor in Suwon and Incheon District Prosecutors' Offices and served as a prosecutor at the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office. He also worked as an inspection officer at the Ministry of Justice.

According to the Special Prosecutor Act, the National Recommendation Committee will submit the names of the two candidates to President Lee Jae-myung in writing. The President is required to appoint one of them within three days, meaning the Special Prosecutor is expected to be appointed by August 17 at the latest. The committee stated that it comprehensively reviewed the candidates' qualifications, including their independence, fairness in investigations, and professional expertise required for the Special Prosecutor's duties, based on recommendations from the Korean Bar Association and the Conference of Korean Law School Deans.
