Election Commission Special Prosecutor Candidates Down to Two

The recommendation committee for the special prosecutor investigating the election management committee has narrowed its choices to two candidates. This special prosecutor will investigate issues such as the shortage of ballots during the June 3 local elections.

The committee is scheduled to hold a meeting at the National Assembly in Yeouido on August 14th. During this meeting, they will select two individuals from a pool of six candidates. These candidates were recommended by the Korean Bar Association and the Conference of Korean Law Schools, and will be presented to President Lee for final selection.

The six nominees are all former prosecutors. They include individuals with expertise in specialized investigations or those who have handled election-related crimes and cases involving public officials. For instance, former prosecutor Lee Hyuk worked on a special investigation team for corruption allegations involving former President Roh Moo-hyun's associates and served as head of the Ulsan District Prosecutors' Office's special investigations division. Former prosecutor Im Kwan-hyuk also held positions as head of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office's special investigations divisions and led the special investigation team for the Sewol ferry disaster.
