Election-counting accuracy rests on technical procedures, Nunes Marques says

Brazil’s electronic voting system is a state policy built over decades, with its accuracy anchored in procedures that are constantly audited and tested, Superior Electoral Court President Kassio Nunes Marques said.

Nunes Marques made the remarks on Tuesday at the opening of “The Path of the Vote,” an exhibition at the Chamber of Deputies. He said the pursuit of election integrity was not a finished task but a permanent commitment of the republic.

Standing alongside Chamber President Hugo Motta, he presented the electronic ballot as the result of institutional cooperation rather than an isolated initiative. Congress, he said, helped build a system designed to respect the will of Brazilian voters. The adoption of electronic voting responded to vulnerabilities in the electoral process that existed previously.

Its evolution is the result of the maturation of Brazil’s democratic institutions and shows that the pursuit of election integrity is not a task that has been completed, but a permanent commitment of the Republic.

Nunes Marques also stressed that the technology itself was never the ultimate goal. Its purpose, he said, was to protect the integrity of the electoral process and the sovereign will of the electorate.

Motta linked the event to the 30th anniversary of Brazil’s electronic voting system in 2026. He said generative artificial intelligence now makes it possible to create and manipulate photos, audio and video with a level of realism that would have been unimaginable a few years ago. Preserving voters’ trust in that environment, he said, will be one of the major challenges facing democratic institutions.
