Electronic Arts misses quarterly bookings estimates ahead of Saudi-backed buyout

Videogame publisher Electronic Arts (EA) announced first-quarter bookings of $1.35 billion, missing analysts' average estimate of $1.48 billion. This shortfall comes as the company faces challenges with player engagement for its "Battlefield" franchise following its launch, raising concerns about its long-term revenue potential from live services.

The company reported a profit of $397 million for the quarter ended June 30, a significant increase from $201 million in the year-ago period. Despite the rise in profit, the lower-than-expected bookings highlight potential headwinds for EA.

EA relies heavily on in-game spending to sustain its titles and generate consistent revenue. The post-launch struggles of "Battlefield 6" in maintaining player engagement could impact its live-service revenue streams. Furthermore, EA is expected to face increased competition from Take-Two Interactive's highly anticipated release of "Grand Theft Auto VI," which is poised to capture significant player attention and discretionary spending.

These financial results come ahead of EA's acquisition by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and a group of investors, a $55 billion deal that recently received approval from the European Union to take the gaming company private. The acquisition is expected to be completed soon.
