Elon Musk, the world's wealthiest individual, has predicted that money will become meaningless within a decade. This statement aligns with theories of "fully automated luxury communism," a concept popularized by British writer Aaron Bastani.

Bastani's theory, inspired by science fiction and Karl Marx, posits that as artificial intelligence increasingly automates labor, wealth will be concentrated in the hands of a few. Eventually, however, this system will collapse under the weight of mass unemployment and poverty, leading creators of AI to either voluntarily or forcibly share their technology with the public, ushering in a classless society.

Musk, who has previously cited science fiction novels like Kim Stanley Robinson's "Mars Trilogy" and Iain M. Banks' "Culture Series" as inspirations, sees a less tumultuous transition. He suggested in a podcast with The Economist that significant wealth redistribution would be necessary, possibly through a high universal income. Musk stated his willingness to pay "trillions" in taxes to facilitate this shift.

While Bastani's "Fully Automated Luxury Communism" draws parallels to Marx's critique of political economy, it diverges on the predicted outcome. Marx foresaw the impoverishment of factory workers and a decline in consumer demand under capitalism. Bastani, however, argues that AI's job displacement will initially create immense wealth for AI developers, before leading to the system's eventual breakdown and transformation.
