Elversberg appeals Vincent Wagner’s suspension

SV Elversberg has appealed against an automatic suspension that could keep coach Vincent Wagner away from the bench for Sunday’s home match against Bayern Munich.

The club filed the appeal within the deadline with the German Football Association’s sports tribunal after Wagner received a disputed yellow-red card during last Saturday’s 4-3 win at Borussia Mönchengladbach. A club spokesperson confirmed the appeal to the German Press Agency.

Wagner was sent to the stands by referee Martin Petersen for unsporting conduct. The decision drew criticism because Wagner had neither physically nor verbally attacked the referee. German referees’ chief Knut Kircher also questioned the dismissal.

“Looking back, there were options that could have been used so that the yellow-red card would not have been necessary,” Kircher said on Sport1’s Doppelpass. “At the end of the day, it was an unfortunate situation.”

If the tribunal accepts Elversberg’s appeal, Wagner can sit on the bench when the newly promoted Bundesliga club hosts record champions Bayern Munich at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. If the appeal fails and the suspension stands, he will have to watch from the stands. The tribunal has not indicated when it will rule.
