Embattled NFF sacks Falcons technical crew

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has dismissed the entire technical crew of the Super Falcons, led by coach Justine Madugu. This decision follows the team's disappointing performance at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, which resulted in their failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup.

The Super Falcons experienced their worst outing in recent history at the tournament, failing to reach the semi-finals for the first time. This outcome denied them an automatic World Cup ticket. Although they had a chance through playoffs, a 2-1 loss to South Africa ended their hopes, marking a significant setback for women's football in the country. The team had previously won a record-extending 10th WAFCON title under Madugu's leadership last year.

This move by the NFF comes amid controversy surrounding the federation ahead of its elective congress scheduled for September 27. The federation announced the decision via its official social media platforms, stating the technical crew members were asked to step down with immediate effect.

In addition to the dismissals, the NFF has inaugurated a fact-finding committee tasked with investigating the root causes of Nigeria's recent dismal performances in international football competitions. The committee, headed by former international Fanny Amun, includes other notable figures from Nigerian football. Their mandate includes probing the direct and remote causes of these setbacks, with a specific focus on the Falcons' ouster.
