Emma Firyana Saroji wary of Whitehead challenge in Commonwealth Games opener

Malaysian lawn bowls star Emma Firyana Saroji is focused on her opening match at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, where she will compete in the Women's Singles event. Her first opponent will be Caroline Whitehead from the Isle of Man on July 28.

Despite never having faced Whitehead internationally, Saroji remains cautious and respectful of her opponent's potential challenge. The world number one acknowledges the motivation gained from her male and female teammates' strong performances in their respective events, hoping to start her campaign on a positive note.

"It really motivates me to start the first match," Saroji told Mingguan Malaysia. She plans to adopt a consistent strategy for all her games, focusing on placing her first bowls as close to the jack as possible and maintaining accuracy with every delivery.

Saroji brings a wealth of experience to the competition, having previously won the gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She also holds impressive titles, including the 2015 Champion of Champions world title and the 2025 Lawn Bowls World Cup.

With her extensive experience and rigorous preparation alongside the national squad, Saroji is determined to make a strong start to the tournament and pave her way towards achieving success at the Games.
