Encarnación officials explain possible causes after fire at Mayor Luis Yd’s country property

A cabin at a country property co-owned by Encarnación Mayor Alfredo Luis Yd Sánchez was completely destroyed by fire, but the flames did not reach the rest of the site.

Volunteer firefighters responded after the blaze was reported at about 9:35 p.m. Sunday in the Santo Domingo neighborhood. The fire consumed furniture, electrical appliances and other household items. Because the cabin was built with machimbre wood, the flames spread quickly and destroyed the bungalow.

According to an official statement from the mayor, initial assessments suggested that the fire began accidentally. Investigators suspected overheating in the electrical wiring, while Yd later said they found indications that an electrical overload may have started the blaze.

Yd said he co-owned the property with two other people whose identities he did not disclose. He said a caretaker noticed the fire and called firefighters immediately. The blaze did not spread to other parts of the property, which includes a barbecue area, a swimming pool and other open spaces.

The mayor estimated the material losses at approximately 100 million Paraguayan guaraníes. He said the country property was used only for personal purposes and not for political or campaign meetings.
