Energy Ministry studies solar power potential along Trans-Java Toll Road

Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is exploring the development of solar power plants (PLTS) along the extensive Trans-Java Toll Road.

This study is a strategic component of the national program aiming to achieve a 100 GW solar power capacity. Tri Winarno, the acting Director General of Electricity at the ESDM Ministry, stated that a study is underway to determine the potential solar power generation capacity achievable from installing solar panels along the toll road.

"Going forward, we asked to study how much (PLTS capacity) can be generated along the Java toll road," Tri said, referencing the successful implementation of solar panels along the Bali Mandara Toll Road as a model. He confirmed that the assessment for this ambitious project on Java Island would commence this year.

Key considerations in the study include technical and safety aspects, particularly concerning high winds along the toll road. These factors will influence the design and placement of the solar panels. The government anticipates that the physical execution of the project could begin as early as next year, given that August has already passed.

Separately, Minister of ESDM Bahlil Lahadalia announced that the first phase of the 100 GW PLTS program would be inaugurated in Bali by President Prabowo Subianto. This strategic project is integrated into PLN's revised Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) for 2025–2034. The development is projected to significantly impact the economy, potentially reducing energy imports by $14.4 billion to $28.9 billion and contributing up to $26.6 billion to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
