Engineers raise registration concerns

Engineers Fiji has voiced significant concerns regarding the non-enforcement of the Engineers Registration Act of 1976, which has created a regulatory vacuum in the engineering profession. President Pratap Singh stated that this oversight makes it difficult to control who officially practices as an engineer, allowing individuals to claim the title without proper qualifications or recognition.

Singh brought these issues to light while submitting remarks on the proposed Public Health Amendment Bill 2026. He emphasized that recognized engineers must adhere to strict competency requirements, professional standards, and maintain adequate insurance to safeguard the public. "We are working, and as you know, perhaps the government has embarked on registering engineers through the Engineers Registration Board, and once that’s done by the government, I think Engineers Fiji can work closely with the government to see who should go on the register," Singh explained.

The organization stresses that robust regulation is essential to ensure that only qualified professionals are entrusted with engineering projects that directly impact public safety. Engineers Fiji is actively working with the government on establishing the Engineers Registration Board. This initiative aims to create a clear process for verifying credentials and ensuring that all practicing engineers meet the necessary standards, thereby protecting public welfare and maintaining the integrity of the profession.
