Enoch Burke applications against Teaching Council refused

An application by Enoch Burke to have the Chair of a Teaching Council panel recuse themselves has been refused. Burke had argued that the panel lacked independence and showed bias. His application for the entire panel to step down was also denied.

During an online hearing, panel chairperson Andy Pike addressed Burke's claims of bias, referencing three social media posts made by Pike. Pike stated that a post from March 17, 2023, commenting "another Enoch float" on St. Patrick's Day, did not demonstrate ridicule or bias. He added that the post was made 18 months before the inquiry began, with no logical link to apprehension of bias.

Pike also addressed a July 20, 2018, post referencing an online discussion about mental health, addiction, and LGBTQ issues, which Burke claimed promoted the use of "they" pronouns. Pike countered that this post was made five years before any complaints were referred to the Teaching Council and could not cause a reasonable apprehension of bias.

A final social media post from November 2025, reposted by Pike, related to a student's experience in an unnamed school. This was also deemed not to have caused a reasonable apprehension of bias. Burke also objected to the role of a legal advisor and alleged breaches of obligations during preliminary hearings.

The allegations against Burke are related to his repeated attendance at Wilson's Hospital School in Co. Westmeath, which breached court orders. He was suspended, placed on administrative leave, and restrained by High Court orders from attending the school, where he was formally dismissed last month.
