Enugu State approves N82,000 minimum wage for university staff

The Enugu State Government has approved a substantial increase in the minimum wage for staff at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT). Effective September 1, 2026, the new minimum wage will be N82,000 monthly, a significant jump from the previous N32,000. This approval follows a report submitted by the Joint Action Committee on Trade Union (JACTU) at ESUT, which had issued a one-month strike ultimatum. The government also sanctioned an across-the-board increase of N50,000 for all other staff categories within the university. The Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, directed the Accountant General to implement the governor's approval. ESUT Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, commented on the development, stating that the university is in further discussions with the state government regarding staff welfare. He noted that governors in the South East region have agreed to a minimum 20% salary increase for state university staff, with the possibility of exceeding this benchmark. Professor Okolie thanked Governor Peter Mbah for implementing the new minimum wage and for his interventions in university infrastructure and academic programs, urging union leaders to allow ongoing negotiations to conclude.
